Глухівчанин Олександр Єрмоленко мав позивний «Водолій». Побратими знали його як врівноваженого командира, який завжди підтримував своїх людей, а вдома він був люблячим чоловіком і батьком трьох дітей. Олександр служив у Державній прикордонній службі, обороняв північ України в перші дні повномасштабного вторгнення, а згодом воював на Луганщині. У липні 2023 року його життя обірвалося на фронті. Спогадами про захисника поділилася його дружина Олена.

«Він завжди вмів заспокоїти»

Олександр і Олена познайомилися у 2011 році. Жінка згадує: вони були дуже різними за характером, але саме це й зробило їхню сім’ю міцною.

«Я емоційна, могла сперечатися чи сердитися, а Саша навпаки — спокійний. Він умів одним словом або поглядом усе владнати. Просто сідав поруч і ніби забирав увесь неспокій», — розповідає Олена.

Позивний «Водолій» Олександр обрав невипадково — і він, і дружина народилися під цим знаком зодіаку.

У мирному житті чоловік любив читати, захоплювався спортом, співав. Саме піснею під балконом колись і підкорив майбутню дружину. Навчався у профтехучилищі, а потім — у коледжі Глухівського педуніверситету.

Після народження старшого сина Натаніеля Олександр вирішив пов’язати життя з військовою службою та підписав контракт із Держприкордонслужбою.

Для дітей був героєм

Згодом Олександр вступив до Національної академії імені Петра Сагайдачного. Після навчання повернувся до служби вже офіцером і обійняв керівну посаду у 9 прикордонному загоні.

За словами дружини, підлеглі поважали його не лише як командира, а й як людину.

«Він ніколи не принижував людей і не кричав. Навіть молодших за віком називав на “ви”. Для нього важливо було підтримати, пояснити, допомогти», — каже Олена.

Попри службу, Олександр намагався весь вільний час присвячувати родині. Разом із дружиною вони виховували двох синів — Натаніеля та Даніеля.

«Для дітей тато був супергероєм. Старший син досі каже, що хоче виконати обіцянку, яку дав батькові — добре вчитися й отримати золоту медаль», — ділиться жінка.

Доньку бачив лише через екран

Повномасштабне вторгнення Олександр зустрів на службі. Його підрозділ обороняв північний напрямок — спочатку на Житомирщині, а потім поблизу Чорнобиля. За службу він отримав відзнаку «За мужність у захисті кордону».

У той час Олена пообіцяла чоловікові: якщо він повернеться живим — у них народиться донька, про яку він давно мріяв. Згодом у родині з’явилася Андріана. Але взяти її на руки Олександр так і не встиг.

«Він бачив донечку тільки по відеозв’язку. Я зробила скріншот їхньої розмови просто на пам’ять. Тоді навіть не думала, що це стане таким важливим фото», — згадує дружина.

На фронті зв’язок був нестабільний. Часто Олена отримувала лише короткі повідомлення: «+», «живий» або «4.5.0». Каже, кожна така смс ставала для неї полегшенням.

«Він до останнього був із побратимами»

Перед відправленням на Луганщину Олександр ненадовго приїхав додому. Увесь цей час проводив із дітьми й намагався надолужити втрачені моменти.

«Коли він їхав, замість звичного “до побачення” сказав “бувай”. Мене це тоді дуже налякало», — пригадує Олена.

5 липня 2023 року чоловік ще встиг написати дружині: «Люблю тебе. Пішов працювати». Після цього на зв’язок уже не вийшов.

Згодом родина дізналася про його загибель.

Олена розповідає: за кілька місяців до цього Олександр потрапив у серйозну аварію, але навіть після травм відмовився залишати службу.

«Я просила його поїхати на реабілітацію, але він сказав, що потрібен хлопцям. Він не міг їх залишити», — каже жінка.

Пам’ять, яку бережуть діти

Олександру Єрмоленку був 31 рік. Після нього залишилися дружина та троє дітей — Натаніель, Даніель і маленька Андріана.

Сини сьогодні мріють бути схожими на батька й часто говорять, що хочуть обрати військову професію. А донька, яка майже не знала тата, впізнає його на фотографіях і на могилі.

«Коли ми приходимо на кладовище, вона показує на пам’ятник і каже: “Папа”. І це дуже боляче чути», — ділиться Олена.

Після загибелі захисника його посмертно нагородили, а пам’ять про нього продовжують берегти рідні, друзі та побратими. Для своїх дітей Олександр назавжди залишився тим самим супергероєм, який завжди був поруч.

Oleksandr Yermolenko, from Hlukhiv, went by the call sign ‘Aquarius’. His comrades knew him as a level-headed commander who always supported his men, whilst at home he was a loving husband and father of three children. Oleksandr served in the State Border Guard Service, defending northern Ukraine in the early days of the full-scale invasion, and later fought in the Luhansk region. In July 2023, his life was cut short on the front line. His wife Olena shared her memories of the defender.

“He always knew how to calm people down”

Oleksandr and Olena met in 2011. She recalls that they were very different in temperament, but that was precisely what made their family strong.

“I’m emotional; I could argue or get angry, whereas Sasha was the opposite — calm. He could sort everything out with a single word or a glance. He would simply sit down beside me and seem to take all the anxiety away,” says Olena.

Oleksandr chose the call sign “Aquarius” for a reason — both he and his wife were born under this zodiac sign.

In civilian life, he loved reading, was keen on sport, and sang. It was with a song under the balcony that he once won over his future wife. He studied at a vocational school and then at the college of Hlukhiv Pedagogical University.

After the birth of his eldest son, Nathaniel, Oleksandr decided to dedicate his life to military service and signed a contract with the State Border Guard Service.

He was a hero to the children

Later, Oleksandr enrolled at the Petro Sahaidachny National Academy. After completing his studies, he returned to service as an officer and took up a senior position in the 9th Border Guard Detachment.

According to his wife, his subordinates respected him not only as a commander but also as a person.

“He never belittled people or shouted. He even addressed those younger than him formally. It was important to him to support, explain and help,” says Olena.

Despite his service, Oleksandr tried to devote all his free time to his family. Together with his wife, they raised two sons — Nathaniel and Daniel.

“To the children, Dad was a superhero. Our eldest son still says he wants to fulfil the promise he made to his father — to study hard and get a gold medal,” she shares.

He only saw his daughter through a screen

Oleksandr was on duty when the full-scale invasion began. His unit was defending the northern front—first in the Zhytomyr region, and then near Chernobyl. For his service, he was awarded the ‘For Bravery in Defending the Border’ medal.

At that time, Olena promised her husband that if he returned alive, they would have the daughter he had long dreamed of. Later, Andriana joined the family. But Oleksandr never got the chance to hold her in his arms.

“He only saw his little girl via video call. I took a screenshot of their conversation just as a keepsake. At the time, I didn’t even think it would become such an important photo,” recalls his wife.

The connection at the front was unreliable. Often, Olena would receive only short messages: “+”, “alive” or “4.5.0”. She says that every such text message was a relief to her.

“He was with his comrades right until the very end”

Before setting off for the Luhansk region, Oleksandr came home for a short while. He spent all that time with his children, trying to make up for lost moments.

“When he was leaving, instead of the usual ‘goodbye’, he said ‘see you later’. That really scared me at the time,” recalls Olena.

On 5 July 2023, he managed to text his wife: “I love you. Off to work.” After that, he never got in touch again.

Later, the family learned of his death.

Olena explains: a few months earlier, Oleksandr had been in a serious accident, but even after his injuries, he refused to leave the service.

“I asked him to go for rehabilitation, but he said the lads needed him. He couldn’t leave them,” says the woman.

Memories cherished by children

Oleksandr Yermolenko was 31 years old. He is survived by his wife and three children — Nathaniel, Daniel and little Andriana.

Today, his sons dream of being like their father and often say they want to join the military. And his daughter, who barely knew her dad, recognises him in photographs and at his grave.

“When we go to the cemetery, she points to the headstone and says, ‘Daddy’. And it’s very painful to hear,” says Olena.

After the defender’s death, he was posthumously awarded, and his memory continues to be cherished by his family, friends and comrades. For his children, Oleksandr has forever remained the same superhero who was always there for them.
