Олександр Поповченко з Глухова жив футболом, родиною та службою. Після років у прикордонному загоні він залишив військову справу, щоб працювати з дітьми й розвивати футбол у громаді. Та після початку повномасштабної війни знову вдягнув форму. У травні 2022 року прикордонник загинув під час бою з російською диверсійною групою поблизу рідного міста.

Футбол був частиною його життя

Із майбутньою дружиною Світланою Олександр познайомився вже у Глухові, хоча вона давно знала про нього як про футболіста.

«Він багато років грав у Шостці. Ми ще студентками ходили на матчі, але особисто не були знайомі. Уже пізніше нас звели друзі», — згадує жінка.

Футболом Олександр захоплювався змалку. Спершу виступав за місцеві команди, потім — за шосткинський «Імпульс» та сумський «Фрунзенець». Після серйозної травми повернувся до Глухова, але спорт не покинув.

У 2007 році він вступив на службу до Держприкордонслужби. Навіть тоді продовжував грати у футбол, поєднуючи службу та улюблену справу.

У 2014 році Олександра направили на Луганщину в зону АТО. Під час одного з обстрілів у бліндаж, де перебував військовий із побратимом, було пряме влучання. Їм вдалося врятуватися.

«Кілька днів від нього не було зв’я

зку. Уже потім дізналися, що вони ледве встигли вискочити», — каже Світлана.

Хотів виховувати нове покоління футболістів

Після повернення додому Олександр продовжив службу, а згодом дедалі більше часу присвячував родині та спорту. Любов до футболу він передав і сину Назару.

«Куди б Саша не їхав — Назар завжди поруч. Він хотів, щоб син ріс у цій атмосфері, звикав до футболу змалку», — розповідає дружина.

У 2020 році чоловік залишив службу. Тоді він вирішив здійснити давню мрію — тренувати дітей. Працював із юними футболістами у Глухові та Соснівці, тренував команду «Спартак».

«Ми жартували, що в нього було дві любові — футбол і я», — усміхається Світлана.

За рік у родині народилася донька Дар’я. Незадовго до повномасштабного вторгнення вони святкували її перший день народження.

Повернувся у стрій після 24 лютого

Уранці 24 лютого Світлана прокинулася від вибухів.

«У вікно було видно, як люди біжать із сумками та дітьми. Я розбудила Сашу, а він спершу не повірив. Коли взяв телефон — там уже були десятки пропущених дзвінків», — пригадує вона.

Спочатку Олександр вступив до тероборони, а потім повернувся до прикордонного загону, де служив раніше.

«Він сказав: “Я йду, щоб захистити вас і не пустити ворога до міста”», — згадує дружина.

Світлана пам’ятає, як чоловік отримав військову форму й буквально світився від радості.

«Я плакала, а він дивився в дзеркало і посміхався. Було видно, що скучив за службою».

Загинув у бою на Глухівщині

16 травня 2022 року Олександр вирушив на бойове завдання поблизу Білокопитового. Того дня прикордонники вступили в бій із російською диверсійно-розвідувальною групою, яка намагалася прорвати кордон. У цьому бою військовий отримав смертельне поранення.

Спочатку дружина не могла повірити у звістку про загибель. У підрозділі служив ще один Олександр Поповченко, через що їх часто плутали навіть у документах.

«Коли мені повідомили про смерть, я подумала — може, знову помилка. Але коли подзвонила знайомому побратиму, а він не зміг нічого сказати… я все зрозуміла», — говорить Світлана.

Пам’ять, яка живе далі

Після загибелі Олександра його пам’ять бережуть дружина та діти. Син Назар нині професійно займається футболом, продовжуючи шлях батька. На честь прикордонника друзі та футбольна спільнота проводять турніри.

А Світлана згодом здійснила одну з мрій чоловіка — зробила татуювання, присвячене родині.

«Коли народилася донька, Саша хотів набити тату про дітей, але не встиг. Тепер у мене є напис: “Ти — мої крила” і два серця з ініціалами дітей», — каже вона.

Oleksandr Popovchenko from Hlukhiv lived for football, his family and his service. After years in the border guard unit, he left the military to work with children and develop football in the community. But when full-scale war broke out, he put on his uniform once more. In May 2022, the border guard was killed during a battle with a Russian sabotage group near his hometown.

Football was part of his life

Oleksandr met his future wife, Svitlana, in Hlukhiv, although she had long known him as a footballer.

“He played in Shostka for many years. We used to go to matches when we were students, but we didn’t know each other personally. It was only later that friends introduced us,” she recalls.

Oleksandr had been passionate about football since childhood. He first played for local teams, then for Shostka’s ‘Impuls’ and Sumy’s ‘Frunzenets’. After a serious injury, he returned to Hlukhiv, but did not give up sport.

In 2007, he joined the State Border Guard Service. Even then, he continued to play football, combining his service with his passion.

In 2014, Oleksandr was deployed to the Luhansk region in the ATO zone. During one of the shelling incidents, the dugout where the soldier was with his comrade was hit directly. They managed to escape.

“We had no contact with him for several days. It was only later that we found out they had barely managed to get out,” says Svitlana.

He wanted to nurture a new generation of footballers

After returning home, Oleksandr continued his service, and later devoted more and more time to his family and sport. He passed on his love of football to his son Nazar.

“Wherever Sasha went, Nazar was always by his side. He wanted his son to grow up in that environment, to get used to football from a young age,” says his wife.

In 2020, he left the service. He then decided to fulfil a long-held dream — to coach children. He worked with young footballers in Hlukhiv and Sosnivka, coaching the Spartak team.

“We used to joke that he had two loves — football and me,” smiles Svitlana.

A year later, their daughter Daria was born. Shortly before the full-scale invasion, they celebrated her first birthday.

Returned to active duty after 24 February

On the morning of 24 February, Svitlana was woken by explosions.

“Through the window, I could see people running with bags and children. I woke Sasha up, but at first he didn’t believe me. When he picked up the phone, there were already dozens of missed calls,” she recalls.

At first, Oleksandr joined the territorial defence, and then returned to the border guard unit where he had served previously.

“He said: ‘I’m going to protect you and stop the enemy from entering the city,’” his wife recalls.

Svitlana remembers how her husband received his military uniform and was literally beaming with joy.

“I was crying, and he was looking in the mirror and smiling. You could tell he’d missed being in the service.”

Killed in action in the Hlukhiv district

On 16 May 2022, Oleksandr set out on a combat mission near Bilokopytove. That day, border guards engaged in combat with a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group attempting to breach the border. During the fighting, the soldier sustained fatal injuries.

At first, his wife could not believe the news of his death. There was another Oleksandr Popovchenko serving in the unit, which meant they were often confused, even in official documents.

“When I was told of his death, I thought — maybe it’s another mistake. But when I rang a fellow soldier I knew, and he couldn’t say a word… I understood everything,” says Svitlana.

A memory that lives on

Since Oleksandr’s death, his memory has been cherished by his wife and children. His son Nazar is now a professional footballer, following in his father’s footsteps. Friends and the football community organise tournaments in honour of the border guard.

And Svitlana later fulfilled one of her husband’s dreams — she got a tattoo dedicated to the family.

“When our daughter was born, Sasha wanted to get a tattoo of the children, but he didn’t have time. Now I have the words: ‘You are my wings’ and two hearts with the children’s initials,” she says.
