Катерині Ющенко з Глухова було лише 25 років, коли її життя забрала війна. Вона завжди була сильною, незалежною і щиро любила Україну — саме такою хотіла бачити й свою державу. Про її дитинство на Луганщині, службу, кохання та віру в свою країну — читайте далі.
Дитинство серед проросійських настроїв
Катя народилася у шахтарському селищі на Луганщині. Попри те, що навколо панували проросійські погляди, батьки виховували доньку патріоткою. Мама захисниці Наталія пригадує: на їхній вулиці проукраїнську позицію мали лише вони та ще один сусід.
“Російська пропаганда настільки глибоко вкоренилася в свідомість людей… Для багатьох росія була всім, а Україну ніби й не сприймали як щось окреме”, — каже жінка.
Саме тому, згадує мати, вона змалку пояснювала Каті прості речі: країна — це велика родина, яку потрібно любити, підтримувати і захищати.
“Вона була дуже твердою характером. Не терпіла, коли їй хтось нав’язував, як жити. Тому й так гостро сприйняла вторгнення. Катя розуміла: своє треба боронити”, — говорить Наталія.
Ще в дитинстві Катерина мріяла бути військовою. Мама пригадує шкільну фотосесію у молодших класах: поки інші дівчатка обирали пишні сукні, Катя фотографувалася у військовій формі з беретом і нагородами.
“Вона хотіла бути захисницею, справжньою лицаркою”, — додає мама.
Як війна звела її з майбутнім чоловіком
Коли у 2014 році на сході почалися бойові дії, Катерина допомагала українським військовим. Попри небезпеку, вона передавала інформацію розвідникам про ситуацію в населених пунктах. Саме тоді й познайомилася з Сергієм — командиром розвідгрупи.
“Катерина була однією з тих людей, на кого можна було покластися. Вона допомагала нам із інформацією про місцевість та людей”, — згадує чоловік.
Сергій каже: дівчина одразу вирізнялася серед місцевих своїм патріотизмом та відкритістю. Спочатку їх поєднувало лише спілкування через службу, але з часом вони стали ближчими.
У 2016 році Сергій отримав тяжке поранення під час бойового завдання у “сірій зоні”. Осколки пошкодили грудну клітину та хребет. Після складної евакуації його доправили до шпиталю в Харкові, де Катя знайшла його і залишалася поруч під час лікування.
“Я довго відмовляв її від шлюбу. Розумів свій стан і думав про її майбутнє. Але вона була непохитною”, — згадує Сергій.
Згодом пара одружилася просто у шпиталі. Їхнє весілля стало особливою подією для всіх, хто там перебував.
Після цього подружжя оселилося у Глухові. Сергій згадує: вони багато подорожували, їздили Україною, часто бували на Луганщині та проходили реабілітацію в різних містах.
“Ми постійно кудись вирушали. Вона була дуже легкою на підйом”, — каже чоловік.
Служба і початок повномасштабної війни
У 2018 році Катерина вступила до лав ЗСУ. Після поранення чоловіка їй довелося залишити навчання у військовій академії, однак бажання служити не зникло. За словами Сергія, остаточно на це рішення вплинула звістка про набір до військової частини у Глухові.
Повномасштабне вторгнення подружжя зустріло окремо: Сергій був у Глухові, а Катерина — на Луганщині.
“Вона подзвонила й сказала: “Нам навіть нікуди виїхати — немає пального”. Тоді волонтери допомогли заправити техніку, і підрозділ зміг рухатися далі”, — пригадує чоловік.
Мати Катерини каже: тривога відчувалася ще до 24 лютого. За кілька днів до вторгнення вона надіслала доньці молитву “Жива допомога”.
“28 лютого Катя написала, що все добре, люди допомагають їжею і є де спати. А наприкінці повідомлення додала: “Дякую, що прищепили любов до Батьківщини”, — розповідає Наталія.
Згодом батьки Катерини були змушені евакуюватися з рідного селища через наближення російських військ. Через свою проукраїнську позицію вони розуміли, що можуть стати мішенню для окупантів.
Остання розмова
Востаннє родина бачила Катерину живою у березні 2023 року, коли в Глухові святкували день народження її мами.
4 квітня Сергій востаннє переписувався з дружиною. Вона написала, що разом із побратимами хоче поїхати до лісу набрати березового соку.
“Це була наша остання розмова. А вже ввечері мені подзвонив командир Катрусі… Тоді я одразу зрозумів, що сталося щось страшне”, — згадує чоловік.
“Полетіла на волю, як совушка”
Рідні згадують Катерину як дуже світлу й життєрадісну людину. Вона любила риболовлю, тварин і завжди збирала навколо себе близьких.
Під час одного з відряджень Катя врятувала маленьку сову, яку знайшли у лісі. Разом із Сергієм вони доглядали птаха вдома, а коли сова зміцніла — випустили її на волю.
“І Катя ніби теж полетіла на волю…”, — зі сльозами каже мама.
Після загибелі доньки рідні замовили її портрет. На ньому Катерина зображена в образі Ксени — героїні її улюбленого дитячого фільму. На тлі — донбаський степ і врятована колись сова.

Kateryna Yushchenko from Hlukhiv was just 25 years old when the war took her life. She had always been strong and independent, and she loved Ukraine dearly — that was exactly how she wanted to see her country. A childhood amidst anti-Russian sentiments
Katya was born in a mining village in the Luhansk region. Although anti-Russian views were prevalent in the area, her parents raised their daughter to be a patriot. Her mother, Natalia, recalls that on their street, only they and one other neighbour held pro-Ukrainian views.
“Russian propaganda had become so deeply ingrained in people’s minds… For many, Russia was everything, and Ukraine wasn’t really seen as a separate entity” — says the woman.
That is precisely why, her mother recalls, she explained simple things to Katya from an early age: the country is a big family that needs to be loved, supported and defended.
“She had a very strong character. She couldn’t stand it when anyone tried to tell her how to live. That’s why she reacted so strongly to the invasion. Katya understood: you have to defend what is yours” — says Natalia.
Even as a child, Kateryna dreamed of becoming a soldier. Her mother recalls a school photo shoot in the lower years: whilst the other girls were choosing frilly dresses, Katya was photographed in military uniform with a beret and medals.
“She wanted to be a defender, a real knight”, — adds her mother.
How the war brought her together with her future husband
When fighting broke out in the east in 2014, Kateryna was helping the Ukrainian military. Despite the danger, she passed on information to reconnaissance units about the situation in the towns and villages. It was then that she met Serhiy, the commander of a reconnaissance unit.
“Kateryna was one of those people you could rely on. She helped us with information about the area and the people”, — he recalls.
Serhiy says: the young woman immediately stood out among the locals for her patriotism and openness. At first, they were connected only through work, but over time they grew closer.
In 2016, Serhiy was seriously wounded during a combat mission in the ‘grey zone’. Shrapnel damaged his chest and spine. After a difficult evacuation, he was taken to a hospital in Kharkiv, where Katya found him and stayed by his side throughout his treatment.
“I tried to talk her out of marrying me for a long time. I understood my condition and was thinking about her future. But she was unwavering”, — recalls Serhiy.
Eventually, the couple got married right there in the hospital. Their wedding was a special occasion for everyone present.
After that, the couple settled in Hlukhiv. Serhiy recalls: they travelled a lot, touring Ukraine, often visiting the Luhansk region and undergoing rehabilitation in various cities.
“We were constantly off somewhere. She was very easy-going”, — says the man.
Military service and the outbreak of full-scale war
In 2018, Kateryna joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After her husband was wounded, she had to put her studies at the military academy on hold, but her desire to serve remained undiminished.
According to Serhii, the news of recruitment for a military unit in Hlukhiv was the final factor that influenced this decision. The couple faced the full-scale invasion separately: Serhii was in Hlukhiv, and Kateryna was in the Luhansk region.
“She rang and said: ‘We can’t even leave — there’s no fuel.’ Then volunteers helped refuel the vehicles, and the unit was able to move on”, — recalls her husband.
Kateryna’s mother says: a sense of unease was in the air even before 24 February. A few days before the invasion, she sent her daughter the prayer “Living Help”.
“On 28 February, Katya wrote that everything was fine, people were helping with food and there was somewhere to sleep. And at the end of the message, she added: ‘Thank you for instilling a love for the Motherland’, — says Natalia.
Later, Kateryna’s parents were forced to evacuate their home village due to the approach of Russian troops. Because of their pro-Ukrainian stance, they realised they could become a target for the occupiers.
The Last Conversation
The family last saw Kateryna alive in March 2023, when they were celebrating her mother’s birthday in Hlukhiv.
On 4 April, Serhiy exchanged messages with his wife for the last time. She wrote that she and her comrades wanted to go into the forest to collect birch sap.
“That was our last conversation. Then, that evening, Kateryna’s commander rang me… I realised straight away that something terrible had happened”, — recalls her husband.
“She flew off into the wild, like a little owl”
Her family remember Kateryna as a very cheerful and lively person. She loved fishing and animals, and always gathered her loved ones around her.
During one of her business trips, Katya rescued a little owl they found in the woods. Together with Serhiy, they looked after the bird at home, and when the owl had regained its strength, they released it into the wild.
“And it was as if Katya had flown off into the wild too…”, — her mother says, in tears.
After their daughter’s death, her family commissioned a portrait of her. In it, Kateryna is depicted as Ksenia — the heroine of her favourite childhood film. In the background are the Donbas steppes and the owl she once saved.
